Pepto bismol is a trusted name for safe and effective treatment for diarrhea and upset stomach in dogs. It provides safe medication to dogs and helps in preventing vomiting. Pepto bismol for dogs eases the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and gives them instant relief. Based on the body weight the dosage is set.  Generally, the prescribed dosage of pepto bismol for dogs is about 1 teaspoon for every 20 pounds of body weight. The dosage has to be given on regular interval of four to six hours.

However some side effects of pepto bismol have also been reported in dogs. The most common side effect of the medicine is a dark black coloured stool which appears. Pepto bismol for dogs may be ineffective in some dogs who are intolerant or less tolerant to silicates. Also to avoid is that this OTC drug should never be given to cats as Pepto bismol is toxic to felines. A similar kind of drug named as Loperamide, also sold as Immodium is safe for both cats and dogs suffering from vomiting and diarrhea. A dosage of one teaspoon of Immodium can be given in every four to six hours. This too follows the same body weight formula, i.e. for every 20 pounds one teaspoon of immodium is recommended. For small dogs the recommended dosage is one teaspoon while for larger dogs higher dose is required.

You must remain cautious regarding the use of pepto bismol for dogs as this medication should never be applied on dogs suffering with bleeding problems or who are pregnant. Diarrhea is a disease that every dog suffers at one point of time or the other in his life as long as the life duration is short and has no issues of dehydration. You must always keep an eye on the disease and see that hoe long it lasts. If Diarrhea persists for more than a week, then you must look faeces and check if any signs of intestinal parasites. Also the concerns about dehydration should be took to notice and addressed after a week or more diarrheal suffering. Signs of loss of weight and appetite must be taken into account while undertaking medication of pepto bismol for dogs.
